  1. International yacht-racing trophy named after 
  2. the US schooner America, owned by J L 
  3. Stevens, who won a race around the Isle of 
  4. Wight 1851. Offered for a challenge in 1870, 
  5. it is now contested every three or four 
  6. years, and is a seven-race series. The USA 
  7. have dominated the race, only twice losing 
  8. possession, in 1983 to Australia and in 1989 
  9. to New Zealand, then regaining it after a 
  10. court battle. All races were held at 
  11. Newport, Rhode Island, until 1987 when the
  12. Perth Yacht Club, Australia, hosted the
  13. series. Yachts are very expensive to produce
  14. and only syndicates can afford to provide a
  15. yacht capable of winning the trophy.
